As the head of the ESBD-Academy within the eSport-Bund Deutschland e.V. (German Esports Federation), Markus Moeckel is responsible for the structure and the development of the education system for esports coaches in Germany. With a bachelor degree in sports and health, a master degree in sports psychology and more than 8 years as a coach in various fields of classic sports he brings a lot of theoretical and practical knowledge into his work at the federation. Together with his team, he built up a C-License for esports coaches (according to the German qualification system for sports coaches) which started in July 2021. Concurrently, he published the first textbook for esports training with the federation which gathers the state of art knowledge about esports performance and how to train it. For us, he will talk about the German approach to educate esports coaches and which barriers are faced by the federation and the coaches themselves when it comes to education.

Tobias M. Scholz is an Assistant Professor at the University of Siegen. His field of research is human resource management and organizational behavior. He is in esports since the early 2000s and worked as a journalist. He was the editor-in-chief of the first German esports magazine in 2004. In 2018 he initiated the University of Siegen eSports team Siegen Bisons. He is the co-editor of the eSports Yearbook, that is released since 2009. He published the book “eSports is Business – Management in the World of Competitive Gaming”. He is also the founding chairperson of the Esports Research Network.

On 03.09.2021, Tobias Scholz is going to tell us a bit more about the European concept of esports in his presentation: „Fostering the European Vision by Utilizing the Emerging European Esports Culture“. Together, we will find out why national identity is still important in a seemingly limitless and infinite world of esports, where there are still invisible borders to be broken up, and if or how this young generation could stand up for their vision of Europe. Esport has evolved as a part oft the European culture and comes with far more possibilities than any traditional sport which might help to resurge the original intention of the European Union and form a community without borders. Focusing on options how to use digitalisation and esport, Tobias Scholz will take us on a journey of future prospects and the possible impact they can have on Intereuropean connections and togetherness.

Frederik Byskov is a pioneer in esports and especially Counter-Strike Global Offensive (CS: GO). Since his first acquaintance with Counter-Strike at its release 20 years ago, he has been an international driving force in the professionalization and commercialization of esports.

He has gone from working unpaid for years (and funding teams, tournaments, news sites and sports leagues out of his own pocket) to hosting the first CS: GO Major (esports equivalent to a Grand Slam) at Dreamhack 2013, founding Astralis in 2016 (the most successful CS: GO team ever) and host the BLAST Pro Series, which not only revolutionized esports events, but has set new standards for sporting events in general at a time when young people have fled flow TV and live events.

In short, Frederik has for the past almost 15 years been a pioneer in all aspects of esports both in Denmark and internationally – something that has given him unique experiences and a deep insight into how to create success both individually, as a team and as an organization.
